Milk Bar class

While I am not able to travel all the time. I do try to make a conscious effort to explore different areas and activities in Los Angeles. I moved to Los Angeles in 2011 for college and like most people never left. I love exploring new restaurants and experiences in Los Angeles, so when I heard Milk Bar was coming to Los Angeles I thought signing up for one our their baking classes would be a unique idea for Valentine’s Day with my boyfriend. Milk Bar is one of the most famous pastry places and was founded by Christina Tosi, check out the Netflix’s show Chef’s Table for a full history lesson on this delicious pastry bar!

Two of their most popular desserts are Crack Pie and Birthday Truffles, so we decided that would be the class we would take! You’ve also probably seen their famous birthday cakes all over your Instagram. But enough about desserts let me tell you about the class! While the class is a little bit expensive at $95 a person the amount of desserts you walk away with definitely makes it worth it. Pro Tip: Definitely go in a pair or with an even number of people so you don’t end up having to work alone.

When you arrive you are given a colorful headband made my Christina and her mother originally for all the employees of the store, but since after this class you will know how to make the desserts you become a part of the Milk Bar “family”. Afterwards they will give you brief instructions on how to use the mixer and the special ingredients used to elevate a decent dessert to a spectacular dessert. Then you dive on in to creating your Crack Pie. When you arrive you will see the crust created for you that you then smooth out into your pie pan before mixing the filling!

After mixing all the ingredients together you will get a break to check out the rest of the store and take photos. The classroom and store provide for 100s of great Instagram photos and the staff is more than willing to help you get the perfect shot.
After your break you will work together in teams to create the infamous birthday truffle. What’s cool about these truffles is that they were created to reduce waste when they were creating other products. Little did they know that this would become one of their top selling products. This process was relatively simple all you do is take a cake, destroy it, roll pieces into a golf ball sized ball, coat in chocolate and cover with sprinkles.
You get to take home about 12 of these delicious truffles!

To be honest everything was very simple and even a novice baker like myself made some delicious birthday truffles and crack pie. I would highly recommend this class for a special occasion such as Valentine’s Day, Birthday, or Christmas gift! Even as a diabetic I would do this or one of the other classes 10x over.
